WINGS OF KYRGYZSTAN - (Arte France/Germany 2020)
Horsefly Films Rare Equine Trust : Director & Cinematographer: Sophie Dia Pegrum

As much a song poem as a film - “Wings of Kyrgyzstan” is a documentary film about the kaleidoscope of life, where the mythology of the horse coincides with the realities of semi-nomadic life, and animals can denote destiny.

Kyrgyzstan is home to the Tien Shan, the Celestial Mountains which tower above lush pastureland - home to thousands of animals and the herders of Central Asia.   Amongst them, a newly married couple struggle to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors with little more than a hut and a treasured horse - an animal considered to be “the wings of man”.  Across the country, on the shores of Lake Son Köl, another family are are living as their ancestors did, adapting their life ways into a new era.

The rhythm of rural life underscores this cinematic journey, where vivid portraits of young men and women, semi-nomads and their elders, share their personal stories and aspirations.

The haunting music and soaring voices of the traditional folk ensemble Ordo Sakhna complete the cycle.
